I can not stand the sound of the car on the highway. It is nearly impossible to have a decent conversation with someone in the passenger seat or on the phone.

I decided to buy some Ebay knock of Dynamat called Fatmat. This material is supposed to be nearly twice as thick as the Dynamat and will stick to anything. It was about half the price of Dynamat and no one seemed to not like it according to seller's feedback. I just got it today and I started with the trunk. I tripled up this stuff where the muffler is and did nearly every possible place I could in the trunk.

Tomorrow I will start with the back seat area and make my way forward all the way to the firewall, including the doors. I might have to order some more, I used 26+ ft alone in the trunk. I am really hoping this will eliminate the majority of the noise, I would prefer to keep the exhaust for power reasons.

Any way here are some work in progress pics, I will post more tomorrow as I make my way forward.

Jerry

looking good. Did you ever consider getting a quiet cat-back (even stock?) with an Ecutout? That way you don't need to add all that weight for quiet's sake?

Not willing to go quiet, I'll lose power and this is a cheaper route than having to buy a $500+ new exhaust. The extra weight is no concern to me, I'll be adding maybe 40lbs of this stuff.

fair enough! though you could trade catbacks and have someone add enough to get a cut-out.
I had to un-dynamat the 325i that I might track, and damn, I just hope for your sake you never want to un-sound dead haha

What catback do you run? I'd bet that you'd net better performance with a good quiet CBE given the weight you're adding. Plus less attention from the cops when traveling. Also, some tracks have DB limits, at least in CA.

I do have a bunch of Dynamat Extreme on my front doors though. My car is very quiet compared to most other modded Subies I've ridden in. Borla Hush is full 3" and quiet even on a wagon.

The Helix. But I don't have a job so, this is way cheaper than another cat back at $500+

Only the front doors? Notice a difference with just the doors?

Don't you have to chisel it when it's cold or something?

I don't know how much it prevents road noise to just do the front doors. I did it for the upgraded stereo components I installed. It gave the door a nice feel/sound when closing them. I'm sure it cuts out some of the tire noise, but I still hear the big cracks in the freeway. I just love that I can road trip in my car and there's zero drone from the exhaust.

Seems like the everyone in the local Subaru club is always trading CBE's since they're always either too loud or quiet...

amen to that. I've had five forms of catbacks, maybe more...
as for removing, you need a torch, and then chisel it off, but getting all of it is tough and tiny pieces of the metal sheets break off and stab you and then you bleed, etc.

Fatmat is great. My buddy did his entire interior of his civic with it. Sounded great. I'm looking at ramm matting my car this spring. Fully catless 4in to 3in turbobaxk spans just a little.

I can't tell yet. I just got everything out of the car this morning, seats, console, carpet, etc.

I am getting ready to start the floor, a lot of things to remove. I'll post some pics in a little bit.

sounds like you are really going at it with the matting. It would really surprise me if it doesn't significantly cut down on the sound.

Here is the fruit of my labor from today. I should be able to finish up tomorrow. I removed everything I possibly could from the rear seat area this morning.

This is very time consuming!! I have been working with 6-8" strips and over lap. I did not do more than two layers. I will put whatever I have left after the doors on the floor.
